FOUNDER

Riya Malhotra

Riya began her volunteer journey at Trinitas Regional Hospital, assisting the dialysis unit by managing phone calls and organizing patient charts. While working in a facility that serves a large, underserved population, she witnessed firsthand how many patients lacked access to basic mobility aids like walkers and wheelchairs—often due to gaps in insurance coverage or missed follow-up care.

Motivated by these challenges, Riya launched an initiative to collect gently used medical equipment from the community and deliver it to the hospital, ensuring it reached those in need. What started as a simple act of compassion soon evolved into a full-fledged nonprofit: Wheeling Towards Change.

Today, the organization is powered by a dedicated team of volunteers who raise awareness through social media campaigns, community fairs, and grassroots outreach. To make donating easy, volunteers offer doorstep pickups from donors. So far, the team has successfully collected and distributed hundreds of mobility aids and other medical equipment to individuals across the region.

Over the past three years, Wheeling Towards Change has expanded its impact beyond Trinitas Hospital, participating in numerous health camps and community events to reach more people in need. Riya also partnered with the Livingston Lions Club to coordinate an international shipment of medical equipment to Ethiopia—extending the organization’s mission across borders.
